When a website is enough

  • You mainly need customers to find you, learn what you offer, and get in touch or make a purchase.
  • Most of your traffic will come from Google search or social media links, which point to web pages, not app store listings.
  • You want the lowest barrier to entry: no download, no app store approval process, just a link that opens instantly.
  • Your budget and timeline favour something faster to launch and iterate on.

Progressive Web Apps: the middle ground

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website that can be installed on a phone's home screen like an app, works to some degree offline, and needs no app store at all. It gives you an app-like feel without full native app cost and complexity, and it's how we built SmartCV, a live commercial product with paying users, installable on any device.

When you genuinely need a native Android app

  • Deep offline functionality is required, for example field staff working in areas with unreliable connectivity.
  • Device features matter, such as camera access, GPS location, or background processing that a website can't reliably do.
  • Push notifications are core to the experience, not just a nice-to-have.
  • Users will open it daily, as part of a habitual routine, which justifies the friction of an install.

A sensible order

In most cases, launching with a website or PWA first lets you validate real demand and refine what customers actually want before committing to a native app, which is a larger, more specific investment. If usage patterns clearly show people want an installed, daily-use experience, that's the signal to build the native app next, not first.

The question worth asking honestly: "Will people open this daily, or will they visit it occasionally?" Daily use justifies an app. Occasional use rarely does.
